🌿 Each year the Rotary Club of Shades Valley funds and internship with the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. This year’s intern, Destiny Buchanan, from Elba, Alabama, is graduating with honors in Biology from UAB, with a minor in STEM Education. During her summer internship at the Gardens, she combined her love of science, education and the outdoors to create meaningful ways for visitors to learn and engage.
She shared her summer highlights with us today that include:
🌱 Creating a seasonal seed pamphlet and recipe card
🌿 Assisting with the Gardens’ kids summer camp—which she described as the most rewarding part of her internship
🌻 Learning about the variety of adult programming offered at the Gardens
🌳 Participating in a professional development trip to the Atlanta Botanical Garden
For her internship project, Destiny addressed the need for diverse educational programming that teaches visitors in informal, hands-on ways. Her Outdoor Discovery Cart includes seven ready-to-use programs, each complete with a lesson plan, supply list, setup instructions, script and breakdown.
Best of all, the cart will remain at the Gardens after her internship for staff and volunteers to use. Destiny hopes it will also provide an opportunity to engage high school volunteers in leading educational activities.
We are proud to hear from young professionals like Destiny who are using their education and creativity to make a lasting impact in our community. Thank you, Destiny, for sharing your work with Shades Valley Rotary! 🌿💚

What an incredible day at our PolioPlus fundraiser gala! We had members from three neighboring clubs join us, which made the work go twice as fast and gave everyone a chance to swap notes on service projects happening across the district. A few photos here don't do justice to how much ground we covered — full recap and numbers will be in next month's newsletter. Thank you to every single person who gave up their Saturday for this.

Saturday morning at PolioPlus fundraiser — our club sorted 450 lbs of donations and packed them into family-sized boxes for distribution next week. Huge thanks to everyone who showed up before sunrise, and to our partners at the county food shelf for making the space available. This is the kind of quiet, unglamorous work that actually moves the needle for families in our community, and we're already planning the next one for later this quarter. If you've never volunteered for something like this, it's a great low-barrier way to get involved with the club.
